Trump Zelensky spat: From being bullied over military attire to unserved lunch – All about 139 min of broken diplomacy

Ukrainian President Zelensky’s February 28 visit to the White House ended in a disastrous argument with US President Donald Trump. A faceoff occurred within minutes, escalating tensions over diplomacy leading to cancellation of mineral deal signing ceremony.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the White House on February 28 lasted 139 minutes but what unfolded during this short span of time was a disastrous outcome. What marked a public implosion of a key global relationship was US President Donald Trump’s faceoff with Volodymyr Zelensky within a span of 10 minutes.

As US President with confidante Vice President JD Vance reprimanded their guest, the two headstrong leaders came face to face and the confrontation resulted in broken diplomacy.

Pointing to Zelensky’s choice of attire for White House visit, a reporter from a right-wing outlet asked Ukrainian President Zelensky why he chose not to wear a suit while in the United States’ highest office. “I will wear a costume after this war will finish, yes,” CNN quoted Zelensky as saying. Adding, he said, “Maybe something like yours, yes, maybe something better. I don’t know, we will see. Maybe something cheaper. Thank you.” This incidence happened before the Oval Office meeting that followed into a shoutout match.

Zelensky had brought with him the UFC belt to the White House which was won by the Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk last year. The colourful gold belt did not find a mention during the heated talks.

Initially, Donald Trump discussed the minerals deal with Zelensky during the meeting, which the two leaders were planning to sign later in the day. No signs of bitterness from Trump towards Zelensky were noted during the first 40 minutes of their discussions. Although everything was prepared in the East Room for the signing ceremony but the conversation to be centred on the deal eroded after explosive exchange between the two.

Trump Zelensky spat

Speaking on behalf of Donald Trump to pursue efforts to bring the conflict with Russia to an end, JD Vance said, “The path to peace and the path to prosperity is maybe engaging in diplomacy.”

This was the point when talks broke down and Zelensky questioned with regard to ceasefires Russia had broken in the past, “What kind of diplomacy, JD, you are speaking about? What – what do you have – what do you – what do you mean?” Responding to his question, JD Vance said, “I’m talking about the kind of diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country.”

Alleging it to be disrespectful, JD Vance rebuked, “I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media,” and added, “You should be thanking the president for trying to bring an end to this conflict.”

When Zelensky objected, angry Trump rebuked, “You don’t have the cards right now,” CNN reported. “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people,” adding, Trump said, “You’re gambling with World War III.” Subsequently, media was dismissed from the room few minutes later.

Consequently, the Ukrainians were instructed to leave and lavish lunch prepared for the guests was never served. The menu included plates of salad, chicken and crème brûlée which was placed on carts in a hallway outside the press secretary’s office.

US President Donald Trump blasted Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday in a heated Oval Office exchange accusing the Ukrainian leader of being “not ready” for peace with Russia. Trump also angrily dismissed the crucial meeting between the two.

Zelensky left the White House abruptly, without securing a minerals deal seen as key to a US-brokered truce. The clash cast fresh doubts on Ukraine’s ability to withstand Russia’s invasion. European leaders, meanwhile, rushed to reaffirm their support for Kyiv.

Here’s how the discussion blew up:

Telling Zelensky that without US assistance Ukraine would have been conquered by Russia, Trump said the wartime leader was in no position to negotiate.

“You don’t have the cards right now,” he said. “You’re either going to make a deal or we’re out, and if we’re out, you’ll fight it out and I don’t think it’s going to be pretty.”

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenky’s brutal ‘dress down’ at White House due to a heated exchange with United States President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance received a strong reaction from Russia.

Backlashing Zelensky for calling Russia alone in the war, Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, said, “How Trump and Vance held back from hitting that scumbag is a miracle of restraint.”

“I think Zelensky’s biggest lie of all his lies was his assertion in the White House that the Kyiv regime in 2022 was alone, without support,” she added.

‘Insolent pig finally got a proper slap’: Top Russian official

A top Russian official sharpened his criticism for Ukraine and even called Volodymyr Zelensky a “pig” who got a tight slap at White House. He also supported Donald Trump allegation that Ukraine is gambling with World War III.

European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen wrote on X, “Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.”

Dutch PM Dick Schoof took to X and wrote, “The Netherlands continues to support Ukraine. Especially now. We want lasting peace and an end to the war of aggression that Russia has started. For Ukraine, for all its inhabitants and for Europe.”

Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Stoere said in a statement to TV2, “What we saw from the White House today is serious and disheartening. Ukraine still needs the US’s support, and Ukraine’s security and future are also important to the US and to Europe. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has strong support in Ukraine, broad support in Europe, and he has led his people through a very demanding and brutal time, under attack from Russia. That Trump accuses Zelenskiy of gambling with World War III is deeply unreasonable and a statement I distance myself from. Norway stands with Ukraine in their struggle for freedom. We hope that the Trump administration also understands the importance of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
